Husband Surprises Wife by Planting 1.2 Million Sunflowers for Their 50th Anniversary

A man from Kansas celebrating his golden wedding anniversary decided to gift his wife sunflowers - on 80 acres of land.

Lee Wilson chose to grow a completely different crop this season than he usually does, and for a very special reason. On August 10, he and his wife, Renee Wilson, celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.

"What do you give your gal on your 50th? I've been thinking about it for quite some time, and she's always liked sunflowers. I thought this was the year to plant sunflowers, so I planted 80 acres of sunflowers for her," said Lee Wilson.

Each acre contains approximately 15,000 sunflowers, totaling 1.2 million flowers.

Lee Wilson secretly planted the field back in May with the help of his son to surprise his wife.

"It makes me feel so very special. There couldn't have been a better gift for an anniversary than a field of sunflowers," shared Renee Wilson.

The couple has spent almost their entire lives together, having met in middle school.

"She couldn't date until she was 16, and I called her on her 16th birthday, and we started dating then. Our first date was roller skating," Lee Wilson recalls.

According to him, he knew she was "the one" from their very first date.

The sunflower field is located about four miles east of Pratt on the south side of Highway 54. Since sunflower seasons are short, they will look splendid for only about 10-14 days.
